A North Sea Operator needed an emergency overhaul for a 6” 600 Anti‑Surge Globe Control Valve that had shutdown production due to damage upon commission whilst being commissioned on site. The failure impacted critical offshore production systems, requiring rapid turnaround valve repair and specialist control valve engineering support.
The Challenge:
A North Sea operator contacted Severn in relation to a major offshore operational failure that had occurred with a control valve critical to compressor anti‑surge protection, resulting in a production shutdown due to damage during on‑site commissioning.
A fast‑track emergency valve overhaul solution was required to minimise production downtime, protect offshore asset availability, and ensure safe operations. This aligns with Severn’s core strengths — providing highly technical valve repair solutions, rapid response engineering, and short turnaround times to ensure clients’ assets remain fully optimised in high‑risk offshore environments.
Finding a solution:
The specialist valve engineering teams in Aberdeen and Brighouse worked cohesively to deliver the best solution for the client. Within two days, the damaged valve was received in Severn’s Aberdeen valve repair workshop, supporting offshore emergency intervention programmes.
Upon inspection of the valve, engineers discovered the internal surfaces had severe scoring and damage on the plug, stem, and cage — indicating critical internal trim failure and compromised control performance.
After initial inspection, precision measurements were taken in line with the original valve design to identify acceptable tolerances prior to overhaul. This ensured the repaired valve would meet OEM performance criteria, process safety requirements, and offshore operational standards.
The Product:
The overhauled valve was a 6” 600 RF FIG 1415 Compressor Anti‑Surge Globe Control Valve, comprising:
- A995 4A body
- Duplex stainless steel / Stellite FC trim
- 4CC Cage – 130 Cv
This valve is designed for critical compressor protection, high‑pressure offshore service, and precision flow control applications in oil and gas production facilities.
The outcome:
The coordinated action plan between the Aberdeen and Brighouse valve repair teams enabled a fast‑track control valve overhaul, delivering a highly effective and technically compliant solution to the client’s offshore issue.
This emergency overhaul was vital to the client’s key objectives:
minimum production downtime, safe offshore operations, and restoration of process reliability.
Just two weeks after initial contact regarding a major offshore operational failure, the valve was expedited back to the customer, significantly reducing lost production time and mitigating wider operational risk.
